Along the Platte River this Lesser Yellowlegs struts along the shore looking for a meal. A member of the Sandpiper family, Yellowlegs usually feed by probing their beaks into the mud and sand along the water’s edge.
The killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) is a medium-sized plover. Adults have a brown back and wings, a white belly and a white breast with two black bands. The rump is tawny orange. The face and cap are brown with a white forehead with an orange-red eye ring. The killdeer frequently uses a “broken wing” act to distract predators from the nest.
Numbering up to 500,000 birds, Snow Geese near the Missouri River take off like a cloud in the sky. Their late fall and late spring migrations provide a spectacular sight for birders.
